Botanical Information
Ambrette Seed (Abelmoschus moschatus) belongs to the Malvaceae family and is an evergreen shrub that grows to approximately 1.5 metres in height. It produces large yellow flowers with distinctive purple centres and pyramid-shaped seed capsules containing greyish-brown, kidney-shaped seeds. These seeds are well known zfor their characteristic musky fragrance. The plant is also referred to by several other names, including Hibiscus abelmoschus, musk seed, Egyptian alcee, target-leaved hibiscus, and muskmallow.
Distribution and Traditional Uses
Ambrette seed is native to India but is now widely cultivated throughout tropical regions, including Indonesia, Africa, Egypt, China, Madagascar, and the West Indies. Although the plant is grown in many countries, the essential oil is commonly distilled in Europe and North America. Other varieties of the plant exist, including Hibiscus esculentus, which is traditionally grown in Istanbul for its soothing medicinal properties, and another variety found in Martinique that produces more delicately scented seeds.
Traditionally, ambrette seeds have been used as a natural stimulant and digestive aid to relieve indigestion, stomach cramps, and nervous dyspepsia. In Chinese traditional medicine, the seeds are used to treat headaches, while in Egypt they are chewed to freshen the breath or mixed with milk as a remedy for itching. In Arab culture, the seeds are often blended with coffee, and throughout many Eastern countries they are commonly used as a culinary spice.
Essential Oil and Characteristics
Ambrette seed essential oil is extracted from the seeds through steam distillation. The freshly distilled liquid is typically aged for several months before use to improve its fragrance and quality. In addition to the essential oil, a concrete and an absolute are also produced through solvent extraction. The oil is pale yellow to reddish in colour and has a rich, sweet, floral-musky aroma that is long-lasting. It blends exceptionally well with essential oils such as rose, neroli, sandalwood, clary sage, cypress, patchouli, and other oriental fragrance oils.

The principal constituents of ambrette seed essential oil include ambrettolide, ambrettolic acid, palmitic acid, and farnesol. These naturally occurring compounds contribute to the oil’s distinctive musky aroma and therapeutic properties.
