Botanical Information
Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) belongs to the Pinaceae family and is also known as Atlantic Cedar, African Cedar, Moroccan Cedarwood, and Libanol Oil. It is a majestic evergreen conifer with a distinctive pyramidal shape that can reach heights of up to 40 metres. Its durable wood is highly aromatic due to its naturally high essential oil content.
Habitat and Cultivation
Atlas Cedar is native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria, although the majority of commercial essential oil production now takes place in Morocco. The tree thrives in mountainous regions with well-drained soils and a Mediterranean climate, where it has become an important source of aromatic timber and essential oil.
Related Species
Atlas Cedar is closely related to the famous Lebanon Cedar (Cedrus libani), from which it is believed to have originated, and the Himalayan Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara), both of which produce similar aromatic oils. It should not be confused with Texas Cedarwood or Virginia Cedarwood, which come from different botanical species and have distinct chemical compositions.
Traditional Uses
Cedarwood has one of the oldest recorded histories of essential oil use. Ancient Egyptians extracted cedar oil for embalming, cosmetics, and perfumes. It was also an important ingredient in Mithridat, a renowned herbal antidote used for centuries. The durable wood of the Lebanon Cedar was prized in construction because its natural aroma repelled insects such as ants and moths. Traditionally, Atlas Cedarwood oil was also used to support bronchial and urinary tract health, serve as a natural preservative, and as a sacred incense. In Tibetan culture, cedarwood continues to be burned in temples and used in traditional medicine.

Atlas Cedarwood essential oil is traditionally regarded as antiseptic, antifungal, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, mucolytic, circulatory stimulant, sedative for the nervous system, tonic, aphrodisiac, and antiseborrheic. These properties make it valuable in supporting skin health, respiratory function, circulation, and emotional well-being.
Extraction Method
The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the wood, stumps, and sawdust. Small quantities of resinoid and absolute are also produced for use in fine fragrance applications.
Aroma and Characteristics
Atlas Cedarwood essential oil ranges in colour from golden yellow to deep amber and has a rich, viscous consistency. Its aroma begins with a warm, slightly camphoraceous note that develops into a sweet, woody, balsamic fragrance with exceptional depth and persistence. It blends exceptionally well with bergamot, cypress, frankincense, clary sage, jasmine, juniper, neroli, vetiver, rosemary, ylang-ylang, labdanum, and many floral and oriental oils.
Major Chemical Constituents
The primary constituents include atlantone, cedrol, caryophyllene, cadinene, and several other naturally occurring sesquiterpenes responsible for the oil’s woody aroma and therapeutic properties.
Safety Profile
Atlas Cedarwood essential oil is generally considered non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing when used appropriately. However, it is best avoided during pregnancy as a precautionary measure.
Aromatherapy Uses
Atlas Cedarwood is widely used in aromatherapy to support acne, eczema, dermatitis, dandruff, fungal skin infections, oily skin, hair loss, skin eruptions, and ulcers. It is also traditionally used to ease arthritis, rheumatism, bronchitis, coughs, catarrh, and respiratory congestion. In addition, it has been valued for supporting urinary tract health, including cystitis, while helping reduce nervous tension, stress, and emotional fatigue through its calming, grounding aroma.
