Essential Oil - Cananga

Essential Oil – Cananga

Botanical Information

Cananga (Cananga odorata var. macrophylla) belongs to the Annonaceae family. It is a tall tropical tree that can grow up to 30 metres in height and flowers throughout the year. The tree produces large, fragrant yellow blossoms that closely resemble those of ylang ylang, from which its essential oil is often compared.

Habitat and Cultivation

Cananga is native to tropical Asia, particularly Java, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Moluccas. It thrives in warm, humid climates with fertile, well-drained soils and is cultivated mainly for its aromatic flowers used in essential oil production.

Related Species

Cananga is closely related to Cananga odorata var. genuina, the source of true ylang ylang essential oil. While both originate from the same species, cananga oil is considered heavier, richer, and less delicate in fragrance than ylang ylang. Unlike ylang ylang, which is separated into several distillation grades, cananga oil is generally collected as a complete distillate.

Traditional Uses

For generations, cananga flowers have been used in Southeast Asian traditional medicine, particularly for minor infectious illnesses such as malaria. The beautifully scented blossoms are also widely valued for ceremonial decorations, religious festivals, and cultural celebrations.

Therapeutic Actions

Cananga essential oil is traditionally regarded as antiseptic, antidepressant, aphrodisiac, hypotensive, nervine, sedative, and tonic. It is especially appreciated for its calming and emotionally balancing effects.

Extraction Method

The essential oil is obtained through water distillation of the freshly harvested flowers.

Aroma and Characteristics

Cananga essential oil is a greenish-yellow to orange, slightly viscous liquid with a rich, sweet floral fragrance and balsamic undertones. It blends particularly well with calamus, birch tar, copaiba balsam, labdanum, neroli, oakmoss, jasmine, guaiacwood, and other oriental fragrance bases.

Major Chemical Constituents

The oil contains a complex mixture of aromatic compounds including caryophyllene, benzyl acetate, benzyl alcohol, farnesol, terpineol, borneol, geranyl acetate, safrole, linalool, limonene, methyl salicylate, and more than one hundred minor constituents that contribute to its distinctive aroma.

Safety Profile

Cananga essential oil is generally considered non-toxic, non-irritating, and safe for topical use when properly diluted. However, individuals with sensitive skin may occasionally experience mild sensitization, so a patch test is recommended before regular use.

Aromatherapy Uses

In aromatherapy, cananga oil is commonly used for skin care, helping to soothe insect bites and support overall skin health. It is also valued for promoting relaxation, easing anxiety, reducing mild depression, relieving nervous tension, and helping manage stress-related conditions.

Other Uses

Cananga essential oil is widely used as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and perfumes, particularly masculine and oriental fragrance blends. It is also used in limited quantities as a flavouring component in selected food products, alcoholic beverages, and soft drinks.
