Botanical Information
Cubebs (Piper cubeba), also known as Cubeba officinalis, Cubeb, Tailed Pepper, Cubeb Berry, or False Pepper, belongs to the Piperaceae family. It is an evergreen climbing vine that can reach up to 6 metres in height. The plant closely resembles black pepper, with heart-shaped leaves and clusters of berries. Unlike black pepper, however, each cubeb berry retains its small stalk or peduncle when harvested, giving rise to its common name, “tailed pepper.”
Habitat and Cultivation
Cubeb is native to Indonesia, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Today it is also grown throughout parts of Southeast Africa, often alongside coffee plantations. Indonesia remains the world’s primary producer of Cubeb essential oil, supplying much of the global market.
Related Species
Cubeb is closely related to Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) and Matico (Piper angustifolium), another medicinal species native to South America. Several similar Piper species are cultivated in Indonesia, including False Cubeb (Piper crassipes), which has occasionally been used to adulterate genuine Cubeb oil.
Traditional Uses
Cubeb berries have long been used as both a culinary spice and a traditional herbal remedy. In many cultures they were valued for supporting urinary and reproductive health, particularly in the treatment of gonorrhea, cystitis, urethritis, prostate infections, and leucorrhoea. They were also widely used to relieve digestive complaints such as indigestion and flatulence, as well as respiratory conditions, including chronic bronchitis. Traditional herbalists believed the berries gently stimulated the mucous membranes of the respiratory and urinary tracts. Historical reports also describe powdered cubeb as being highly effective in the treatment of amoebic dysentery.

Cubeb essential oil is traditionally regarded as pulmonary and genito-urinary antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, antibacterial, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, and stimulant. These properties have made it particularly useful in supporting respiratory, urinary, and digestive health.
Extraction Method
The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the fully developed but still unripe berries. An oleoresin is also produced in limited quantities for use in flavoring and fragrance applications.
Aroma and Characteristics
Cubeb essential oil is a pale greenish to bluish-yellow, viscous liquid with a warm, woody-spicy aroma complemented by subtle camphoraceous notes. It blends well with cananga, galbanum, lavender, rosemary, black pepper, allspice, and many other spice and woody essential oils.

The oil is composed primarily of sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes, including caryophyllene, cadinene, cubebene, sabinene, and other naturally occurring aromatic compounds that contribute to its therapeutic activity and distinctive fragrance.
