Botanical Information
Star Anise (Illicium verum) belongs to the Illiciaceae family and is an evergreen tree that can grow up to 12 metres in height. It has a tall, slender white trunk and produces distinctive star-shaped fruits made up of five to thirteen seed-bearing follicles attached to a central core. The plant is also known by several common names, including Chinese anise, illicium, and Chinese star anise.
Distribution and Traditional Uses
Star Anise is native to southeastern China and is also cultivated in Vietnam, India, and Japan, with China remaining the world’s primary producer. Several related species exist, including Japanese star anise, which is highly poisonous and should not be confused with the edible variety.
For more than 1,300 years, Star Anise has been an important herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has been traditionally used to stimulate digestion and treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis and dry coughs. Throughout Asia, it is also valued as a remedy for colic, rheumatism, and digestive discomfort. The seeds are commonly chewed after meals to freshen the breath and aid digestion, while the spice remains a popular ingredient in many traditional Asian dishes.
Essential Oil and Characteristics
Star Anise essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the fresh or partially dried fruits. A smaller quantity of oil may also be obtained from the leaves. The essential oil is a pale yellow liquid with a warm, spicy, intensely sweet liquorice-like aroma. It blends exceptionally well with rose, lavender, orange, pine, and many other spice essential oils. Due to its pleasant fragrance, it is also widely used to mask undesirable odours in various products.
Chemical Composition
The primary constituent of Star Anise essential oil is trans-anethole, which makes up approximately 80–90% of the oil. This compound is responsible for the oil’s characteristic sweet liquorice aroma and many of its therapeutic properties.
Therapeutic Benefits
Star Anise essential oil possesses antiseptic, carminative, expectorant, insect-repellent, and stimulant properties. In aromatherapy, it is commonly used to relieve muscular aches, rheumatism, bronchitis, coughs, colic, cramps, flatulence, indigestion, and symptoms associated with the common cold. Its warming and digestive-supporting actions make it particularly beneficial for gastrointestinal and respiratory health.
Safety and Precautions
Unlike aniseed essential oil, Star Anise essential oil is generally not considered a skin irritant despite its high anethole content. However, excessive use should be avoided because large doses may produce narcotic effects, slow blood circulation, and potentially lead to cerebral disorders. Therefore, the oil should always be used in moderation and according to recommended guidelines.
Industrial Uses
Star Anise essential oil is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry as an ingredient in cough syrups, lozenges, and medicinal preparations, where it also helps mask unpleasant tastes and odours. It is commonly incorporated into soaps, toothpaste, detergents, cosmetics, and perfumes as a fragrance ingredient. In addition, the oil is extensively used as a flavouring agent in confectionery, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and many other food products.
