Botanical Information
White Birch (Betula alba) belongs to the Betulaceae family and is a graceful deciduous tree that typically grows between 15 and 20 metres in height. It is distinguished by its slender branches, silvery-white bark that naturally peels into scales, and light green oval leaves. The tree produces male catkins measuring 2–5 centimetres long and female catkins that can reach up to 15 centimetres. It is also known by several botanical names, including Betula alba var. pubescens, Betula odorata, Betula pendula, European White Birch, and Silver Birch.
Distribution and Traditional Uses
White Birch is native to the Northern Hemisphere and grows widely across Eastern Europe, Russia, Germany, Sweden, Finland, the Baltic region, northern China, and Japan. Numerous cultivated varieties exist, while related species such as Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera) and Betula verrucosa are also used for producing birch bud oil and birch tar.
Unlike Sweet Birch (Betula lenta), whose essential oil contains high levels of methyl salicylate, White Birch essential oil is considered much safer for therapeutic use.
Traditionally, birch buds were incorporated into hair tonics to strengthen and condition the scalp. Birch tar has long been used throughout Europe for chronic skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema. In Scandinavian countries, fresh birch twigs and young leaves are bundled together and used during sauna bathing to stimulate circulation and tone the skin. Birch sap, collected in spring, has traditionally been consumed as a cleansing tonic. The buds, bark, and leaves have also been valued in herbal medicine to support kidney function and to help manage rheumatic conditions, arthritis, oedema, urinary tract infections, and urinary stones.
Essential Oil and Characteristics
White Birch essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the leaf buds. Birch tar is produced separately by slow destructive distillation of the bark, after which it is steam distilled to obtain purified birch tar oil.
Birch bud oil is a pale yellow, slightly viscous liquid with a fresh woody-green balsamic aroma and has a tendency to crystallise at lower temperatures. Crude birch tar is a thick, almost black oily substance, while rectified birch tar oil is a clear brownish-yellow liquid with a rich smoky aroma often described as resembling Russian leather. It blends particularly well with woody and balsamic essential oils.
Chemical Composition
Birch bud essential oil contains betulenol as its principal constituent together with several naturally occurring sesquiterpenes.
Birch tar oil contains aromatic compounds including phenol, cresol, xylenol, guaiacol, creosol, pyrocatechol, and pyrobetulin, the compound responsible for its distinctive leather-like fragrance.
Therapeutic Benefits
White Birch essential oil possesses anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, cholagogue, diaphoretic, diuretic, febrifuge, and tonic properties.
In aromatherapy, it is commonly used to support healthy skin by helping relieve dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, congested skin, and dull complexions. It is also valued in hair care preparations for promoting scalp health. For the musculoskeletal system, White Birch may help improve circulation while supporting the management of arthritis, rheumatism, muscular discomfort, cellulitis, oedema, toxin accumulation, and obesity-related fluid retention.
Safety and Precautions
White Birch essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitising when used appropriately. Nevertheless, as with all essential oils, it should be properly diluted before topical application and used according to recommended guidelines.
Industrial Uses
White Birch bud oil is widely incorporated into hair tonics, shampoos, and cosmetic products because of its beneficial effects on the scalp and skin. Birch tar is extensively used in pharmaceutical ointments, lotions, and dermatological preparations for chronic skin disorders. Rectified birch tar oil is also an important ingredient in soap manufacturing and is highly valued in perfumery, particularly for creating distinctive leather accord fragrances and aftershaves.
