Essential Oil - Celery Seed

Essential Oil – Celery Seed

Botanical Information

Celery Seed essential oil is obtained from Apium graveolens, a member of the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family. Also known simply as Celery Fruit, this familiar biennial herb typically grows between 30 and 60 cm tall. It has grooved, fleshy stems, glossy divided leaves, and clusters of delicate white flowers that later produce the aromatic seeds used for essential oil extraction.

Habitat and Cultivation

Originally native to Southern Europe, celery is now cultivated worldwide as both a culinary vegetable and medicinal herb. Commercial production of Celery Seed essential oil is concentrated in India, with additional production in the Netherlands, China, Hungary, and the United States. The plant grows best in fertile, well-drained soils with full sun and consistent moisture.

Related Species

Several cultivated forms of Apium graveolens exist, including celeriac (A. graveolens var. rapaceum), grown for its edible root, and stalk celery (A. graveolens var. dulce), commonly consumed as a vegetable. Although these varieties belong to the same species, Celery Seed essential oil is distilled specifically from the mature seeds.

Traditional Uses

Celery seeds have long been valued in traditional herbal medicine and as a culinary spice. Herbal practitioners have used them to support kidney and bladder health, improve digestion, relieve menstrual discomfort, and reduce fluid retention. Traditionally, the seeds were also believed to promote the elimination of uric acid, making them popular remedies for gout, arthritis, rheumatism, and neuralgia. Celery has also been used to support liver function and bile flow and remains listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as a traditional remedy for rheumatoid arthritis accompanied by low mood.

Therapeutic Actions

Celery Seed essential oil is traditionally regarded as antioxidant, antirheumatic, urinary antiseptic, antispasmodic, digestive stimulant, carminative, cholagogue, diuretic, hepatic tonic, nervine, mild sedative, galactagogue, emmenagogue, and digestive tonic. These properties make it particularly valuable for digestive, urinary, musculoskeletal, and nervous system support.

Extraction Method

The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the whole or crushed mature seeds. Small quantities of essential oil, oleoresin, and herbal extracts are also produced from the entire plant.

Aroma and Characteristics

Celery Seed essential oil is a pale yellow to orange liquid with a warm, spicy, slightly sweet, and long-lasting herbal aroma. It blends especially well with lavender, pine, opopanax, lovage, tea tree, oakmoss, coriander, and many other spice oils.

Major Chemical Constituents

Its primary constituents include limonene (approximately 60%), apiol, selinene, santalol, sedanolide, sedanolic acid anhydride, and other naturally occurring aromatic compounds that contribute to its distinctive fragrance and therapeutic activity.

Safety Profile

Celery Seed essential oil is generally considered non-toxic and non-irritating, although it may cause skin sensitization in some individuals. Due to its potential emmenagogue activity, it is not recommended during pregnancy. As with all essential oils, it should be diluted before topical application.

Aromatherapy Uses

In aromatherapy, Celery Seed essential oil is commonly used to support arthritis, gout, rheumatism, and the removal of metabolic waste products. It is also valued for easing indigestion, flatulence, dyspepsia, liver congestion, and jaundice. Traditionally, it has been used to support cystitis, amenorrhea, glandular balance, milk production, neuralgia, and sciatica, while promoting overall physical and emotional well-being.

Other Uses

Beyond aromatherapy, Celery Seed essential oil is incorporated into digestive tonics, sedative preparations, and carminative formulations. It is also widely used as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, detergents, and perfumes, as well as a flavouring agent in the food, spice, alcoholic beverage, and soft drink industries.
