Essential Oil - German Chamomile

Essential Oil – German Chamomile

Botanical Information

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), also known as Matricaria chamomilla, belongs to the Asteraceae (Compositae) family. Common names include Blue Chamomile, Hungarian Chamomile, Sweet False Chamomile, Single Chamomile, and Chamomile Blue Oil. This fragrant annual herb grows up to 60 cm tall and features slender branching stems, finely divided feathery leaves, and delicate white daisy-like flowers with yellow centers. Although it closely resembles Corn Chamomile (Anthemis arvensis), German Chamomile can easily be identified by its distinctive sweet herbal aroma.

Habitat and Cultivation

German Chamomile is native to Europe and parts of North and Western Asia, but it has become naturalized throughout North America and Australia. Today it is cultivated extensively, particularly in Hungary and other Eastern European countries, which are the leading producers of its essential oil. Despite its name, commercial cultivation in Germany is now minimal.

Related Species

Several species of chamomile are used in herbal medicine and aromatherapy. The most notable is Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), which produces a milder essential oil. Other related species include Pineapple Weed (Chamaemelum suaveolens), though German Chamomile remains especially valued for its exceptionally high anti-inflammatory activity.

Traditional Uses

German Chamomile has been one of Europe’s most respected medicinal herbs for centuries. Traditionally it has been used to calm nervous tension, ease digestive discomfort, relieve stress-related headaches, and promote restful sleep. It has long been considered one of the safest herbal remedies for children, helping soothe colic, teething discomfort, irritability, and digestive upset. It has also been widely used for treating skin inflammation, burns, eczema, and allergic reactions due to its remarkable soothing properties.

Therapeutic Actions

German Chamomile essential oil is traditionally regarded as analgesic, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antimicrobial, carminative, digestive, cholagogue, hepatoprotective, febrifuge, fungicidal, nerve sedative, wound-healing (cicatrisant), vermifuge, and vulnerary. It is particularly renowned for its powerful anti-inflammatory effects, largely attributed to its high chamazulene content.

Extraction Method

The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the fresh flower heads, producing approximately 1.9% oil. A deep blue absolute is also produced in limited quantities, prized in perfumery for its rich aroma and excellent fixative qualities.

Aroma and Characteristics

German Chamomile essential oil is a deep blue, viscous liquid with a sweet, warm, herbaceous fragrance. Its distinctive blue color develops naturally during the distillation process as chamazulene is formed. The oil blends beautifully with lavender, geranium, patchouli, rose, benzoin, neroli, bergamot, marjoram, lemon, ylang-ylang, jasmine, clary sage, and labdanum.

Major Chemical Constituents

Its primary active constituents include chamazulene, α-bisabolol and bisabolol oxides, farnesene, en-yn-dicycloether, and other sesquiterpenes. Notably, chamazulene is not naturally present in the fresh flowers but forms during steam distillation, giving the oil its characteristic deep blue color and exceptional anti-inflammatory activity.

Safety Profile

German Chamomile essential oil is generally regarded as non-toxic, non-irritating, and safe when properly diluted. However, individuals sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family may occasionally develop allergic skin reactions or dermatitis. A patch test is recommended before topical use.

Aromatherapy Uses

German Chamomile is widely used in aromatherapy to soothe acne, eczema, dermatitis, burns, cuts, allergic skin reactions, rashes, boils, insect bites, sensitive skin, teething pain, and minor wounds. It is also valued for easing arthritis, muscle pain, neuralgia, rheumatism, and sprains. Digestively, it helps relieve indigestion, colic, dyspepsia, and nausea, while supporting women’s health during painful menstruation, heavy menstrual bleeding, and menopausal discomfort. Its calming properties also make it a popular choice for reducing stress, headaches, migraine, insomnia, and nervous tension.

Other Uses

German Chamomile essential oil is widely incorporated into pharmaceutical preparations, including antiseptic creams, digestive remedies, antispasmodic formulas, and herbal tonics. It is also extensively used in cosmetics, soaps, hair-care products, bath products, fine fragrances, and high-quality perfumes. Additionally, it serves as a natural flavouring ingredient in a variety of foods, alcoholic beverages, and soft drinks.
