Essential Oil - Chamomile Maroc
Essential Oil – Chamomile (Maroc)
Botanical Information
Chamomile Maroc (Ormenis multicaulis), also known as Ormenis mixta, Anthemis mixta, or Moroccan Chamomile, belongs to the Asteraceae (Compositae) family. This attractive annual herb grows between 90 and 125 cm tall and is distinguished by its finely hairy foliage and bright yellow tubular flowers surrounded by white ray petals. Although commonly referred to as a chamomile, it differs significantly from both German and Roman Chamomile in appearance, aroma, and chemical composition.
Habitat and Cultivation
Chamomile Maroc is native to northwestern Africa and southern Spain, where it naturally grows in warm Mediterranean climates. It is also found on plains in Israel. Commercial production of the essential oil is concentrated in Morocco, where the flowering tops are harvested during peak bloom for steam distillation.
Related Species
Although classified within the same botanical family as German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), Chamomile Maroc is only distantly related to these species. Its essential oil possesses a distinctly different aroma and chemical profile, making it unsuitable as a direct substitute for either German or Roman Chamomile oil.
Traditional Uses
Chamomile Maroc is a relatively recent addition to the aromatherapy market and therefore lacks the extensive history of traditional medicinal use associated with other chamomile species. While often marketed as a chamomile oil, it is more accurately referred to as Ormenis Oil. Its traditional applications have primarily focused on promoting relaxation and supporting digestive and women’s health, although documented historical use remains limited.
Therapeutic Actions
Chamomile Maroc essential oil is traditionally regarded as antispasmodic, cholagogue, emmenagogue, hepatic, and sedative. These properties suggest potential benefits for digestive function, liver support, menstrual health, and nervous system relaxation.
Extraction Method
The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the fresh flowering tops. This process yields a fragrant oil prized primarily for its aromatic qualities rather than its extensively documented therapeutic effects.
Aroma and Characteristics
Chamomile Maroc essential oil is a pale yellow to brownish-yellow, mobile liquid with a fresh herbaceous top note followed by a rich, sweet balsamic undertone. Its pleasant fragrance blends particularly well with cypress, lavender, lavandin, vetiver, cedarwood, oakmoss, labdanum, frankincense (olibanum), and artemisia essential oils.
Major Chemical Constituents
The complete chemical composition of Chamomile Maroc essential oil has not yet been fully established, and the principal constituents remain insufficiently documented in the scientific literature.
Safety Profile
Current information suggests that Chamomile Maroc essential oil is generally non-toxic and non-irritating when used appropriately. However, comprehensive toxicological and safety studies are still limited, so it should be used with reasonable caution and properly diluted before topical application.
Aromatherapy Uses
Chamomile Maroc is traditionally used in aromatherapy to support sensitive skin, relieve colic, colitis, headaches, migraine, insomnia, irritability, menstrual discomfort, amenorrhea, menopausal symptoms, and liver or spleen congestion. Nevertheless, because its therapeutic profile has not been extensively studied, many of these applications continue to rely on practitioner experience rather than strong clinical evidence.
Other Uses
Chamomile Maroc essential oil is widely appreciated in the fragrance industry, particularly in the production of fine perfumes, colognes, chypre fragrances, and fougère compositions. Its rich herbaceous-balsamic aroma makes it a valuable ingredient for adding depth and complexity to sophisticated perfume blends.
